This tournament honors Mr. Dewain Barber, a gentleman most scholastic people have come into contact with at one time or another. He has spent 45 years of his life working to improve scholastic chess. He organizes several tournaments, has served on numberous committees, helps people who need help, etc. He also taught chess as a junior high teacher for many years.

This tournament has two different components, a K/6 Non-Rated section (one on Saturday and one on Sunday)..."no keeping score, no clocks, just having fun playing chess...that is what it is all about." (Mr. Barber) and USCF rated sections (some 2 day and some 1 day commitments). Here is all the information about the tournament:

Information/Important Notes:

2. USCF ratings as of May 9, 2018 are the official ratings used for all rated sections.
3. No "Play Up" is allowed unless your rating on May 9, 2018 is within 50 rating points from the section you wish to play up in. There is also a $10 "Play-Up" fee charged and is due payable on May 9.
4. Tournament organizers and directors reserve the right to inspect all electronic devices to make sure they are accepted by USCF rules.
5. 1, 1/2 point bye for all USCF rated sections is allowed but must be stated to Tournament Officials before round 3 begins.
6. Parents are allowed the first 2 rounds to come into the playing hall with their children to get them seated and take pictures. After round 2, all players are to enter on their own.
7. Lunch time is when you wish and when you can find time before your next round begins. There is a restaurant inside this hotel close to the Tournament Area.
8. Parents seating area is directly outside the Playing Hall.
9. Parking is validated at the front desk and is $3/day.
10. If no questions are asked to Joe Hanley, it is understand and agreed you understand all terms and conditions of this tournament.

Refund Policy

If a refund is requested prior to May 5, a $8 processing fee is charged and the remainder refunded. If requested from May 5-10, a $12 processing fee is charged and the remainder refunded. No refunds are offered on May 11 or after.

Finally, we ask you to read the following waiver. It is the same as on the registration flyer.

By my registration here online, I am acknowledging I am the parent/guardian of the child I am registering for. I am permitting him/her to participate in the 2018 Dewain Barber Scholastic Chess Tournament at the Atrium Hotel in Irvine, CA. on May 12-13, 2018. I understand I am completely responsible for my child for the entirety of time of the tournament. I understand if my child does not behave of the expected norm inside of a hotel, there will be a behavior fee of $50 that I must pay before my child is allowed to continue participating. I also agree to hold harmless Joe Hanley, Yvonne Hanley, Hanley Chess Academy or any other person volunteering or working in some capacity for this tournament. I also give permission to any staff member to render medical treatment should it become necessary. I agree to allow transportation to any hospital should this become necessary
